About

Our story

A corner cafe on Elm Street, open since 2021, run by people who actually like mornings.

How it started

From the back of a bookshop to the corner of Elm Street

Ruth spent six years running the little cafe at the back of Page & Co. When the bookshop closed, the regulars asked where they were supposed to go now. This is the answer.

Morning Bell opened in March 2021 with one espresso machine, a secondhand deck oven and six tables. It has a few more tables now, a proper bakery out the back, and a name that comes from the old school bell still bolted to the wall above the door.

We open at 06:30 on weekdays because the neighbourhood does, and stay open until mid-afternoon. After that the place is available for private events, which is how most of the local birthdays seem to happen.

What we care about

A few things we will not compromise on

Baked today, not thawed

Sam starts at four. Laminated dough takes three days, and you can taste the difference in the first bite.

Coffee we can explain

Beans from Northline Roasters, roasted twenty minutes away. Ask what is in the grinder and someone will tell you the farm.

Everyone gets a seat

Laptops on weekdays, prams on weekends, dogs on the terrace, grandparents at the window table.

Less waste

Bring a cup and save fifty cents. Unsold bread goes to the shelter on Bridge Road every afternoon.
